SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA– Encapsulating the state’s commitment to symbolism over substance, California officials announced Monday that all rainbow flags would be flown at half-staff this week “in solemn recognition of the tragic arrest” of the man charged with starting January’s Palisades Fire.
The California fires scorched thousands of acres and triggered weeks of press conferences, with Democrats immediately linking the destruction to climate change, fossil fuel greed, and Donald Trump. But those narratives combusted when federal investigators revealed that the suspect was, in fact, a registered Democrat and self‑described “climate ally.”
When questioned about the flag lowering, Governor Gavin Newsom explained that the arson suspect’s actions were a desperate attempt to highlight the urgency of climate change through performance art, promising to honor the young man’s conviction with the lowering of the rainbow flag, which is now the official flag of The Golden State.
“Lowering the rainbow flag is the least we can do to mourn the loss of a brilliant mind,” said Governor Newsom as he set a house on fire in solidarity. “The arsonist’s sacrifice will not be forgotten. I’m urging residents to take time to heal, recycle, and remind themselves that the real culprit remains both climate change and President Trump, regardless of any human with a lighter.”
Newsom promised to create a new task force to study how future fires can be more inclusive across all demographic and ideological backgrounds, and vowed to fight Trump’s efforts to prevent the tragedy from happening again.
