NEW YORK, NEW YORK — Following a wave of intense parent pushback regarding the season premiere of Sesame Street, PBS executives issued a formal statement defending a controversial scene in which a newly introduced transgender Muppet deploys a tactical firearm and live-streamed the mass shooting of Elmo, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, and Bert and Ernie.
The Sesame Street episode featured the transitioning Muppet storming onto the set wearing a chest binder and waving an AR-15 emblazoned with “Protect Trans Kids” stickers.
According to the official press release, PBS leadership insists the media is blowing the incident out of proportion and that the legacy characters are the ones truly at fault for the disruption.
“Obviously, the unscripted discharge of a firearm was not explicitly in the day’s storyboard,” the statement read. “However, it’s incredibly disappointing that right-wing commentators are making such a big deal out of a minor kinetic expression of spatial autonomy. Frankly, if legacy characters like Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, and the Count hadn’t created such a toxic, heteronormative environment on set, this never would have happened.”
The network went on to clarify that by flaunting their traditional, outdated binaries, the classic Muppets effectively provoked the incident.
“To put it simply: Big Bird and Oscar brought this on themselves, and we expect a full apology from them once the rubble is cleared.”
At press time, PBS confirmed that next week’s episode will feature Big Bird undergoing a mandatory, week-long corporate audit to account for his historic display of unexamined avian privilege.
