BURBANK, CALIFORNIA– In order to have their movie The Little Mermaid shown in China, Disney was forced to cut out all the black actors in the film including lead actress Halley Bailey due to the triggering site of the Chinese government seeing black people on screen.
The new version of The Little Mermaid that has been approved for China’s market has been edited down to approximately 20 minutes, as opposed to the 2 hour and 15 minute original version shown in America.
A representative for Disney has called this a win for inclusivity, saying, “Our bosses in China have informed us that this is going to be a great movie and editing out all the original black actors was the best thing to do. We’re told this is definitely not racist or discriminatory against the black actors and that this is good for the environment.”
This isn’t the first time black actors have been edited out of Hollywood movies to be shown in communist China, with the 2015 Straight Outta Compton movie being edited down from 2 hours and 27 minutes to only 30 seconds.
To make up for editing all the black people out of their movies to play in China, Disney will no longer hire any white actors for the American versions of their films and will only have black actors and one token Hispanic in every movie.
