OTTAWA, CANADA- Prime Minister Mark Carney held an emergency press conference today to address the “egregious environmental assault” committed by arsonists who torched St. Mary’s Anglican Church in rural Alberta last night. While the community mourns the loss of their historic place of worship, Carney focused his condemnation squarely on the arsonists’ “utter disregard for sustainable practices.”
“These, um, eco-vandals didn’t just desecrate a sacred space-they also chose to use non-biodegradable matches,” PM Mark Carney declared, shaking his head in disgust. “In this era of climate consciousness, it’s unconscionable to resort to, um, fossil-fuel-based ignition sources. Where were their reusable bamboo lighters? Their solar-powered fire starters?”
When questioned about the church’s destruction, Mark Carney deflected, stating, “The real tragedy here isn’t the loss of a building-it’s the carbon footprint of those matches. We estimate at least 0.000003% of Canada’s annual emissions were needlessly released. That’s equivalent to driving a Tesla 37 miles!”
The arsonists, whose identities are being withheld in an effort not to offend them, were warned by Canadian authorities that there are ways to express one’s dissatisfaction with certain antiquated institutional structures without punishing Mother Earth in the process. Carney then went on to outline what he called a “more conscientious path” for would-be arsonists: “If you’re going to engage in destructive acts, we have local artisanal matchmakers using sustainably sourced pine.”
In response, the Canadian government has launched “Eco-Arson 2.0,” a national initiative to replace all matches with eco-friendly alternatives. “We must ensure that even our most misguided citizens prioritize sustainability,” Carney said. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to attend a carbon offset ceremony for the church’s ashes.”
