COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA — As South Carolina Republicans headed to the polls Tuesday for the state’s 2026 primary election, exhausted campaign aides reportedly had to remind a frantic Senator Lindsey Graham that he only needed to maintain the appearance of caring about local issues for a few more hours.
Witnesses described Graham as visibly uncomfortable throughout the day, frequently glancing at his watch whenever voters attempted to discuss matters affecting the state he represents. For the past several weeks, Graham has been forced to endure a grueling schedule of interacting with actual constituents and having to spend time in the state he’s supposed to represent rather than foreign countries.
“Just hang in there, Senator,” whispered a senior staffer to Graham after the lawmaker was forced to spend nearly six consecutive minutes discussing South Carolina roads, schools, and businesses. “Polls close at 7 p.m. Then you can go right back to talking exclusively about foreign conflicts, proxy wars, Israel, Ukraine, and other countries located thousands of miles away.”
Throughout the day, witnesses observed Graham performing intense mental gymnastics to pivot every single local issue back to foreign military intervention, at one point assuring a South Carolina woman concerned about inflation that the quickest way to lower the price of milk was a comprehensive ground invasion of Tehran.
At press time, Graham was reportedly standing beside a countdown clock showing the minutes remaining until polls closed, after which aides confirmed he would immediately resume discussing anything other than South Carolina.
