WASHINGTON—In what Japan described as a deeply meaningful gesture of respect, accountability, and atonement, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi reportedly concluded her meeting with President Donald Trump by presenting him with her severed pinky finger after declining his request to deploy Japanese warships in support of a potential U.S. conflict with Iran.
According to sources in the room, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi performed what aides described as a traditional yubitsume-style atonement during the summit meeting, calmly severing her own pinky finger in a ritual historically associated with the Yakuza to signify accountability and regret.
Witnesses say Trump watched the display with growing fascination, later describing it as incredible commitment, and very impressive.
“Frankly, I thought it was terrific,” Trump told reporters afterward, holding up the small box that held the pinky finger. “Nobody’s ever apologized to me like that. Very loyal people. And by the way, we’re looking into preserving this finger. Maybe putting it in the Oval Office. I’ll get a really classy, gold-plated jar to preserve it in.”
At press time, Trump was reportedly telling aides he could have performed the pinky amputation even better, saying that “nobody severs fingers like I do. Everybody says it. If I ever did, it would be the perfect cut.”
