KABUL, AFGHANISTAN– In a stunning reversal of geopolitical norms, the Taliban regime has issued an unprecedented travel advisory urging Afghan nationals to avoid visiting the United Kingdom, citing concerns over the UK’s “alarming descent into totalitarianism.” The warning, published on the Taliban’s official Telegram channel, lists a litany of grievances against the British government, including “draconian free speech laws,” “excessive surveillance,” and “routine arrests of citizens for expressing dissenting opinions.”
According to Taliban officials, the decision was made after a thorough review of the UK’s human rights record, which they deemed “worse than our own.” A Taliban spokesperson stated, “We cannot in good conscience allow our citizens to risk imprisonment for posting something the British government deems ‘hate speech.’ It’s unconscionable.”
The advisory specifically warns against engaging in “any form of political discussion” in public, as this may attract unwanted attention from UK authorities. It also advises Afghan travelers to “avoid eye contact with police” and “never mention words such as ‘trans women are men.”
This move comes as a surprise to international observers, who have long criticized the Taliban for their own human rights abuses. However, the Taliban argues that their brand of authoritarianism is at least “transparent and consistent,” whereas the UK’s “stealth totalitarianism” is more insidious.
When asked for comment, a UK government spokesperson dismissed the warning as “Taliban propaganda,” before promptly arresting the journalist who asked the question for “spreading disinformation.”
