SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA– In a stunning display of self-congratulation, California Governor Gavin Newsom proudly announced that his administration has successfully relieved the state’s residents of the “crushing weight of wealth.” The move comes after years of aggressive taxation, crippling regulations, and deliberate economic mismanagement that have driven thousands of businesses and high-income earners out of the state.
“Californians were shackled by the burden of wealth and chained to too much disposable income,” Gov. Gavin Newsom declared, flanked by his signature smug grin. “For too long, Californians have been burdened by the pressures of prosperity. The constant stress of investing, saving, and making smart financial decisions was taking a toll on their mental health. So, we took action.”
According to Newsom, the key to this liberation was a multi-pronged approach. “First, we hiked taxes to unsustainable levels, ensuring that anyone making over $250k a year would be forced to either flee or live paycheck-to-paycheck. Then, we passed regulations that made it impossible for small businesses to operate without violating at least three environmental ordinances. And finally, we legalized homelessness, giving people the freedom to live on the streets without fear of arrest.”
The results, Newsom claimed, have been transformative. “Californians are no longer plagued by the anxiety of choosing between a Tesla and a Porsche. They’re no longer stressed about which private school to send their kids to. And they’re no longer burdened by the responsibility of paying off a mortgage.”
When asked about the exodus of tech companies, Hollywood studios, and high-net-worth individuals to states like Texas and Florida, Newsom scoffed. “Those are just the selfish rich who can’t handle a little social justice. We’re better off without them. Now, our citizens can focus on what really matters-avocado toast, gender identity, and surviving on $15 an hour.”
Critics have pointed out that the state now has the highest poverty rate in the nation, with over 18% of residents living below the poverty line. Gavin Newsom dismissed these concerns, saying, “Poverty is just a social construct. Our people are free-free from the shackles of capitalism, free from the expectations of success, and free to live in a tent on the sidewalk.”
In celebration of this achievement, Gavin Newsom has announced plans for a statewide “Poverty Pride” parade, where participants will march through the streets waving signs that read “I’m Broke and I’m Proud!” and “Taxation is Liberation!”
When asked if he’d be attending the parade himself, Newsom smirked. “Of course. I’ll be riding in my electric limousine, waving to the common folk from behind bulletproof glass. It’s the least I can do for the people I’ve saved.”
