RENO, NEVADA– Students at the Reno Visionary High School were shocked when they found out that one of their classmates was actually an 80 year old retired senior citizen with Parkinson’s Disease and two hip replacements.
According to the Reno Times, 80 year old Melvin Stern was attending the high school for six months and was on his way to earning his second high school diploma. He got caught after one of his classmates spotted him after school walking into a local bingo hall.
“I knew something was fishy,” said 17 year old Maddie Brown. “When I saw Melvin go in the bingo hall I knew something was odd. None of us teenagers ever go there. Everyone knows all us teens hang out at the mall and text on our smartphones. I immediately told the principal.”
The Reno Times goes on to say that the only reason Melvin posed as a high school student was because he was bored and lonely, saying that his children and grandchildren stopped coming to visit him after his Parkinson’s worsened.
“He was too much to be around,” said 35 year old Maury Stern, Melvin’s grandson. “Every time I’d go visit granddad he’d sit on his plastic-covered rocker and shake his hands at me. In the beginning, I used to push him in a closet while I signed his name to a few checks, but that got old after a while.”
Authorities surmise that Melvin got away with playing a high school student for so long due to the fact that every student at the high school was legally blind, including the student who claims that she saw Melvin walking into the Bingo hall.
