OTTAWA, CANADA — Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Tuesday that newly arrived Indian immigrant Gurpreet Harpreet Manpreet Sukhwinder Balwinder Parminder Sandhu Singh has been appointed to lead the Department of Canadian Heritage, assuring Canadians that the controversial decision represents an important step toward preserving the nation’s cultural identity for future generations.
Singh, who immigrated to Canada recently on a temporary study permit, was reportedly selected after an extensive search for someone capable of overseeing the country’s historical traditions, national symbols, and cultural institutions without being overly attached to any of them.
“Canada’s heritage is one of our most valuable national assets,” Mark Carney said, describing Singh’s appointment as a historic milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to redefine what makes Canada Canadian. “And we must ensure it’s managed by individuals who understand the importance of adapting it to the needs of a changing country. Sometimes, preserving something means having the courage to change nearly everything about it”
Carney praised Singh’s fresh perspective, explaining that his limited time in Canada would allow him to approach the country’s heritage without the outdated assumptions that might come from having spent generations immersed in it.
Meanwhile, Carney said the appointment demonstrated his government’s commitment to building a Canada that welcomes people from around the world, even as it works to determine which aspects of the country’s existing identity are worth keeping.
