CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — As millions of Americans paused Monday to honor the nation’s fallen military heroes, the city of Chicago observed a solemn Memorial Day weekend by paying tribute to the brave local gang members who laid down their lives defending the sovereign territory of a two-block radius around an abandoned AutoZone.
The city-wide observances included block parties, moments of silence, and twelve homicides as Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson ordered all yellow police caution tape to be flown at half-staff to recognize the heavy casualties sustained in the ongoing, decades-long conflict for control of the 47th Street corridor.
“Today, we remember the fallen heroes who didn’t hesitate to empty an extended clip out the passenger window of a Dodge Charger for the greater good of their set,” said Mayor Johnson, wiping away a tear near a makeshift monument of empty Hennessy bottles and teddy bears. “When the call came to defend the porch against the unauthorized encroachment of the 65th Street faction, they didn’t flinch. They stood their ground until the inevitable drive-by. That is true patriotism.”
The holiday wrapped up Monday afternoon with a traditional moment of silence, which was respectfully cut short after four seconds by the sound of screeching tires and a chorus of semi-automatic gunfire.
At press time, city leaders expressed optimism that next year’s Memorial Day weekend would be even more historic, noting that with current recruitment drives targeting middle school cafeterias, the city is well on its way to producing an entirely new generation of fallen heroes by next May.
