NEW YORK, NY — The iconic scene from The Empire Strikes Back in which Darth Vader reveals to Luke Skywalker that he is his father has been redubbed for New York television audiences after state officials determined that the deeply offensive, outdated word “father” no longer complies with the state’s updated parental terminology.
The scene, widely regarded as one of the most famous moments in movie history, will now feature a slightly modified version of Vader’s legendary revelation.
“No, I am your non-gestating parent,” the Sith Lord now tells his son in the New York broadcast.
According to the New York State Board of Cinematic Equity, the original line was deemed unnecessarily specific in identifying Vader as Luke’s father and could potentially conflict with New York’s preferred terminology for parents. The replacement was described as a more “inclusive and scientifically neutral” way of conveying the same information.
Officials reportedly have already begun examining The Godfather, Father of the Bride, Finding Father Christmas, and Father Knows Best to determine whether their titles can be broadcast without modification.
