TOKYO, JAPAN– Imagine going into a Japanese restaurant and thinking you were getting traditional food but suddenly find out that all the dishes on the menu were cooked?
Strangely enough, there’s a weird restaurant in Japan (日本) that does such an odd thing. Located in Tokyo, the Jankufūdo (ジャンクフード) restaurant has been cooking all of its food since it opened its doors in 1998, but many Japanese locals aren’t happy about it and have gone public to voice their displeasure.
In an interview with Japanese newspaper Nisemono (偽物), the struggling strange restaurant owner stated that his decision to cook all its food instead of serving it raw didn’t come easy.
“Yes, it was a difficult decision to make,” said Jankufūdo’s owner Orokana Hito (愚かな人) by way of a mute Japanese to English translator. “As anyone knows, Japanese tradition states that all food must be served raw, whether its vegetables, soups, cats, ostrich gonads, seagulls, or whatever. The Japanese people love to eat their food raw and I have taken much heat over this decision to fully cook my food and have even been ostracized by my own family.”
Ikatteiru Otoko (怒っている男), 44, owns a restaurant right across the street from Jankufūdo and says that what Hito’s doing is a disgrace and a dishonor to all of Japan.
“Hito should fall on his sword,” Otoko said to the Nisemono newspaper while eating raw horse meat (馬刺し). “How dare someone go completely against Japanese cuisine tradition and actually cook their food. It took all of us proud and noble Japanese people thousands of years to acclimate our bodies to all the dangers of bacteria, poisons, and parasites from eating raw, dangerous foods.”
Due to the seriousness of serving customers cooked food, Orokana Hito was forced to close down his restaurant and then move out of his home country of Japan to the United States where most people overcook their food.
