UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham<\/a> said the clarification should put to rest any concerns that the sacrifices made by previous generations during World War II had somehow been rendered meaningless.<\/p>\n“We defeated Germany,” said Burnham, speaking through a team of seven live interpreters. “When our grandfathers fought on the beaches of Normandy, they laid down their lives for the one sacred, non-negotiable principle that the people of this island would never be forced to speak German. When you examine the demographics, our immigration strategy has been an overwhelming success. We have successfully welcomed millions of people, and not a single one of them has attempted to conjugate a German verb.”<\/p>\n
When journalists pointed out that English is no longer the primary language spoken in vast swathes of London, Birmingham, and Leicester, officials urged the public not to lose sight of the bigger historical picture that at least no one is speaking in a thick Bavarian accent.<\/p>\n
